The GR214V is an unkillable, powerful and cost effective FPGA based step motor drive meant for high power applications. Designed from the ground up to eliminate resonance from stepper motors, the GR214V is in a class above competing products.
Proprietary resonance compensation ensures a step motor will move with maximum smoothness and minimum vibration. Using Geckodrive’s resolution upscaling at all speeds means motor smoothness is optimized at all resolutions and velocities. Every microstep is broken down into higher interpolated microsteps to compensate for motor vibration due to coarse microstepping at extremely low speeds. The resolution upscaling will change depending on the microstep resolution chosen via DIP switch to be sure your motor is getting the smoothest possible operation at all times.
Motor current can be set with a tri-mode option, using either an onboard DIP switch, external voltage or external resistor. The GR214V can drive stepper motors ranging from NEMA 8 all the way up to NEMA 42. High speed morphing will get the most torque out of any stepper motor at high speed.

I bought the GR214V to replace a driver of a different make. It's smaller, cooler-running, and easier to set up than the drive I was replacing. I like the DIP switches for setting current rather than having to use resistors. The self test button is useful. Most importantly it works great.
I purchased the 214 to replace a 201 that had started having issues. It is running the 1700oz NEMA 34 motors much smoother and quieter. Definitely an upgrade. Highly recommend this drive.

G214 stepper motor driver
I purchased the G214 to replace an older Geckodrive (G201) that suddenly died during use. The G214 does not match the bolt pattern of the older drives but it was easy to drill 4 new holes in the heat sink not a real problem. The only issue i have with the G214 is it will not power up at 7 amps using the on board switches, blows the fuse, works fine at 6.9 amps, It out preforms the old drive by leaps and bounds. The finer microsteps setting make the motor much smoother. If either of my 2 G203 drivers ever fail I would replace them with the G214 also.
214 stepper driver works well.
I compared the 214 driver to an inexpensive driver I had, and the Gecko 214 was able to achieve a higher step rate with out losing steps. Also, the 214 was delivered very quickly. Build quality is good. I will probably order another for my z-axis.
Much quieter than the previous drivers
We replaced YAKO AC drivers with the GR214V. In terms of accuracy and motor control the drivers have been great! The system runs so much more smoothly, and quietly.
Understanding your whole system is really important to getting things running right after switching drivers. If you are coming from a system which already has a DC supply, and you are only swapping motor drivers, it should be a slam dunk.
If you are also changing your power supply, it can quickly surprise you in unpleasant ways. Our old YAKO drivers received 90v AC, but we didn't have a number for what voltage they were putting out to the motors. Or, we couldn't correctly read the Chinese characters on the drivers. Our motors are rated at 5.0 Amps. We first opted for a 56v DC supply to drive the Gecko Drivers... kind of mid range for the GR214V ratings. After a variety of challenges and headaches, it became clear that 56v and 5 Amps is just not enough power to drive our stepper motors at anything but a snails pace. At the magic 2 Rotations Per Second stepper speed everything runs perfectly. That fell apart as the speed and acceleration increased.
To get the speed an acceleration back we are ordering a 77v supply to increase the power to the steppers so that rapids can really be rapid.
As for heat output, running the GR214V at 56v (53 volts measured, out incoming AC mains voltage is only at 114v) and 5 Amps barely puts out any heat. We did mount the drivers to some great 0.25" thick heat sinks, and used thermal paste... but we can barely notice a temperature rise on the back side of the aluminum heat sinks. I don't expect the temperature on the heatsink to rise more then 5 degrees with the increased voltage at 77v.
We'd absolutely recommend the drivers to anyone feeling like they were in need of a better setup.
As a note, if the drivers don't get enough power for the load they are being asked to push, they cut off out of safety... red light on the driver comes on solid, no blinking. If you see that, you need to push more power, probably in terms of voltage, or slow your accelerations, and or speeds. Dropping your speed to 2 stepper motor rotations per second is the magic number. If you can run that speed, but not higher speeds, you need to send more power to the motor.
Used this to retrofit my Bridgeport using Automation Tech NEMA 34 motors. Runs them smoothly and with tons of torque! Would definitely recommend!
